Apple Lifts iPhone Duo Production by Over 40%

Supply chain reports indicate the company is scaling up manufacturing targets for its new folding device to meet pre-order demand.

Apple has ordered a more than 40% increase in iPhone Duo production, a supply chain report indicates, in a direct response to what the company has called “extraordinary” pre-order interest for its first folding handset.

The report, based on supply chain sources, details a significant revision to Apple's shipment targets. The company's expectation for the device's first 12 months on sale has been increased from 9.7 million units to a new figure of 14 million.

This manufacturing surge follows a chaotic pre-order period that began Friday. Delivery estimates for the iPhone Duo shifted to later dates within roughly a minute of orders opening, with some customers quoted for shipment in late January. Apple attributed the delay to what it described as “extraordinary” demand for the new form factor, while also limiting purchases to two devices per customer to curb scalping activity.

The company's production plans suggest a strategic bet on sustained consumer interest. The report indicates that Apple expects strong demand to continue for the foreseeable future, prompting the increase in its shipment targets. This move follows recent adjustments where some customers who initially received extended delivery dates were subsequently given earlier shipping estimates.

The stakes for the rollout remain high as early adopters navigate the device's current limitations. Third-party applications are not yet optimized for the iPhone Duo, though Apple states that support from developers is improving rapidly. The company has also faced criticism regarding its hardware specifications, specifically the inclusion of a fingerprint sensor instead of facial recognition technology.

However, future iterations may address this concern. Reports from today indicate that Apple is already testing prototypes for an iPhone Duo 2 that would incorporate Face ID. This suggests the company is moving quickly to address feedback even as it ramps up production of the current model to meet immediate demand.
